Pele, a Brazilian football legend who made his name as a goal-scoring youngster and guided his country to an incredible three World Cup victories, passed away on Thursday at the age of 82.

He was admitted to the hospital in late November, and in December, medical professionals reported that he was battling with advanced cancer, in addition to kidney and heart issues.

He underwent surgery to have a colon tumor removed in September 2021.

Pele's death was due to multiple organ failure, according to a statement from the Albert Einstein hospital where he was getting treatment.

Pele stood for Brazil at the World Cup, in club matches, and on international tours with his team Santos. After a late-career stint with the New York Cosmos, Pele contributed to a comeback of interest in the game in the United States.

On October 23, 1940, Edson Arantes do Nascimento was born in Tres Coracoes, a city located about 250 kilometers outside of Rio de Janeiro. At age 15, he signed a contract with Santos.

He joined Brazil's national squad at age 16, and at age 17 in 1958, he made his World Cup debut.

He scored three goals in Brazil's second World Cup game, making him the youngest player to ever score three goals in a single game and the youngest player to ever score in the men's World Cup.

He scored 77 goals in 92 matches throughout his time playing for his country, and together with Diego Maradona of Argentina, he was awarded FIFA's player of the 20th century.
